Special Notes on Monster and it's TP Moves

Merrow come in four job types; Bard, Corsair, Samurai, and Red Mage.

All of the regular job abilities and Magic spells that come with the Merrow jobs pose problems. The Bard and Red Mages can be dangerous.

Hysteric Barrage is only used when the Merrow's weapon is broken.

Hysteric Barrage can deal serious damage.

Torrent is very annoying. When it happens, your target will unlock, which is an easy way to know it happened.

Obtaining the Spell
Minimum Blue Mage Level Needed To Acquire Spell: Level 60 with Magus Jubbah equipped, 63 without.
Tail Slap is best hunted in Arrapago Reef.

This spell can not be soloed. You will need a small party, or a skilled Level 75 solo-class (BST, NIN, RDM, DD/NIN). A basic experience party set up will work very well.

Party members should have a way to erase Bard songs and magic cast on players, so a White Mage, or White Mage subjob for the Blue Mage is called for. Having a way to silence a monster is a huge help. There is aggro on the way to camp, so Sneak and Invisible spells or items are needful. Remedies for Paralysis, can save your fights. You may need the Lamian Fang Key, a key item to move deeper into the Reef. A warp item will save a long walk home.

Merrow Hunting Grounds Camp #1
Name Level Location
Merrow Chantress (BRD) 73-75 Arrapago Reef
Merrow Icedancer (COR) 73-75 Arrapago Reef
Merrow Kabukidancer (SAM) 73-75 Arrapago Reef
Merrow Shadowdancer (RDM) 73-75 Arrapago Reef

There are four Merrows that are in the first part of Arrapago Reef that can be reached with limited annoyance.

The first, A on the map above, is a Merrow Chantress at H-10 on the boat where the PUP job quest ??? is located. There is a Draugar with her.

The Second, B on the map above, is also a Merrow Chantress, she is at H-10 on the boat where the COR job quest ??? is located. There are two Draugars with her, and several Draugars, a Lamiae, and other Undead aggro on the way to the camp. You will need to use the Lamian Fang Key to get to this spawn. You can always go back through the gate, but will need another key to re-enter this part of the map again if you do.

The Third camp, C on the map above, is a Merrow Icedancer, she is in the I-7 area. There are two Draugars with her, and several Draugars, a Lamiae, and other Undead aggro on the way to the camp. You will need to use the Lamian Fang Key to get to this spawn. You can always go back through the gate, but will need another key to re-enter this part of the map again if you do.

The last camp, D on the map above, is a Merrow Shadowdancer, she is around H-8. There are two Draugars with her, and several Draugars, a Lamiae, and other Undead aggro on the way to the camp. You will need to use the Lamian Fang Key to get to this spawn. You can always go back through the gate, but will need another key to re-enter this part of the map again if you do.

With the exception of Camp A you will need to work past a lot of other aggro to hunt the spell. While B-D are possible places to learn, most Blue Mages camp the spawn at A, waiting for respawn as needed. It's not an overly long wait, so it's a much better way to go then dealing with all the aggro at the other camps.

The only issue with the camp is the single Draugar that is close to the target Merrow. If your puller is careful, it is not hard to pull either the Merrow or the Draugar by themself, as they do split up often. The Draugar will aggro by sound, and low HP, so be ready to zone or deal with the add if it happens. It will not link with the Merrow, so you only need worry about aggroing it. Once you kill your first Merrow, you can keep the spawns nicely seperated by killing the Draugar as you wait for the Merrow repop.

Once you pull the Merrow, bring her off the boat to the rocky area right before it. You want some distance from the Draugar, in case your HP dip yellow, to avoid blood aggro. Feed the Merrow TP and hope for your spell.

A average party should have no problems in these camps. Silence and Head Butt are both very useful when fighting these casty Merrows. A solid Trio with the Blue Mage, a Damage Dealer tank, and a Healer/Debuffer can easily deal with the Bard Merrow at camp A.

Merrow/Nix Songstress (BRD) 81-83 Arrapago Reef
Merrow/Nix Typhoondancer (SAM) 81-83 Arrapago Reef
Merrow/Nix Wavedancer (COR) 81-83 Arrapago Reef

There are Higher level Merrows deeper in the Reef. A solid Merit or Exp party can kill these. Not Recommended.

Merrow Hunting Grounds Camp #3

Merrow Seafarer (RDM) ??? Undead Swarm Besieged

Merrow Shadowdancer ??? Assault Mission - Operation: Snake Eyes
Merrow No.16 ??? Assault Mission - Operation: Snake Eyes

Tail Slap can be learned in the Chief Sergeant level Assault; Operation: Snake Eyes. This mission has Merrow who use the spell. Your party should have no issue killing them.

Special notes about the spell a Blue Mage may like to know

Do I need any special items? Yes, a White Mage or White Mage subjob for Erase helps. Sneak and Invisibility items to reach camp. Setting Chaotic Eye and Head Butt will be a big help. A warp item to save a walk home.
Remember, you can only learn the spell from the Merrow, NOT Lamiae.
Do Merrow like to use the move? Yes, they seem to use it often.
The Spell deals physical Hand to Hand Blunt Damage.
