Obtaining the Spell
Minimum Blue Mage Level Needed To Acquire Spell: Level 12
Poison Breath is best hunted in Gusgen Mines.

This spell can be soloed in the later camps starting at level 12. For the best camp, you can solo it starting around level 25, but it's better toward 30 due to aggro issues. A higher level helper, or small party is very useful if you want the spell before you can use it.

Bring Remedies to deal with the Paralysis, or be able to cast Paralyna. Eye Drops for Blindness are a help. You may need sneak and Invisible spells or potions to reach camp.

Hound Hunting Grounds Camp #1
Name Level Location
Bandersnatch 21-24 Gusgen Mines

There are thirteen Bandersnatch spawns in the very first part of Gusgen Mines, and they are up all day, not just at night. It's this concentration of always ready Hounds that makes this the best camp. There is a negative here though. Aggro from other monsters, and the Bandersnatch's mid 20's level, make it very difficult to solo the spell at a time before you can cast it. The spawn areas are noted above with red dots.

There are Skeletons, and worms on the way to, and with many of the spawns. All will aggro if you are in your 20's. The bright side is that none of the monsters will link. So you can pull easily. The dark side is that they ALL aggro to sound and low hit points. So if a fight goes poorly, and you see yellow HP, unwelcome friends can come to visit quickly!

Having a single high level lifeguard can make getting this spell a heck of a lot simpler. It is also one of the first times that a 'Blue Burn and Learn" party is a good option. A half dozen Blue Mages can easily handle any monster in this part of Gusgen.

If you are soloing, you will need to reach a safe spot near a spawn to pull, and without aggroing any thing near, pull a Hound to your camp. You'll want to put out a lot of damage right off the bat to make sure you reduce the Hound's HP for a fast finishing kill should you see the spell. Cure yourself to prevent yellow HP and the undead aggro that it causes. Hopefully you will learn the spell if you see it. Sadly Hounds have Six moves and Poison Breath does not seem to be a top pick. So it can take a lot of effort to learn this one.

With a High level helper, or party, things of course are much simpler. Kill hounds and anything in the way until you learn!

Hound Hunting Grounds Camp #2
Name Level Location
Black Wolf 5-8 North Gustaberg

If you wish to solo the spell, then you best bet is in North or South Gustaberg between the night time hours of 20:00 and 04:00.

Black Wolfs will spawn in both the North and South Gustaberg, most often on the Hills with ramps that you can climb. There is always one spawn at the F-8/F-9 area. This Spawn area is noted on the Map above.

Even if you are learning the spell at level 12, as soon as you can, these wolves will be very weak, and die easily if you hit them at all. So, to learn, take off all your weapons and armor, and attack the wolf, hitting it Hand to Hand only once, then turn your back on it. Let it hit you to build TP. It will take about sixteen hits for it to have enough TP to do a move. Yes it's mind blastingly boring! Given that Hounds don't seem to favor Poison Breath, it can take a long time to see the spell. Your fights will last as long as you have MP to cure yourself. If you set auto-regen with Sheep Song and Healing Breeze, you can last a very long time.

Eventually the Hound WILL use the spell. Turn and kill it. Hopefully you will learn. If not, try to find another, or wait until the next night at the camp above.

The Spell can be learned from other Hounds in many places. In the outside zones, they will appear at night between 20:00 and 04:00. The low level ones can be handled as described in Camp #2. Any of the Mid-level Hounds can be fought directly using the Head Butt/Bludgeon school of soloing. As for the very high level Hounds, since there are much better places to learn, why bother?

Special notes about the spell a Blue Mage may like to know
Can I solo it? Yes. In the Low Outdoor camps you can do so easily. You may need help, or be around level 30 to solo in camp #1.
Do I need any special items? Yes, Remedies, or a way to cast Paralyna can save your life. Eyedrops for Blindness. A Low Damage weapon for the Outside camps.
Do Hounds like to use the move? No they do not, with six moves to choose from, they seem to overlook this one a lot. It can be annoying to see.
The spell's damage is calculated by: (Your Current HP / 10) + (your level / 1.25)
Poison Breath can be paired with any of the following spells to create the Clear Mind Trait: Soporific, Venom Shell, Awful Eye, Filamented Hold, Maelstrom, Feather Tickle, Corrosive Ooze, Sandspray, Warm-Up, Lowing, or Mind Blast.
